PSHE & RSE
Intent
At Jubilee Wood Primary School, we believe that children thrive when they feel safe, valued and confident to be themselves. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education plays a central role in supporting this, ensuring that pupils are equipped not only for academic success, but for life beyond the classroom.
Our intent is to provide all pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to develop healthy relationships, maintain good mental health, and make informed, responsible choices as they grow. We aim to support children to understand themselves, manage their emotions and develop empathy and respect for others, so that they can play an active and positive role within the school community and wider society.
Implementation
PSHE at Jubilee Wood Primary School is delivered using the Kapow Primary PSHE and RSE scheme, supported by Kapow Wellbeing units and explicit Growth Mindset lessons.
PSHE is taught through regular, timetabled lessons, ensuring it is given a clear and valued place within school life. Our PSHE curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all pupils. Lessons are adapted to meet individual needs and are delivered in a way that is respectful of different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences. Clear ground rules are established so that pupils feel confident to share ideas and ask questions, particularly when learning about sensitive topics within Relationships and Health Education.
KS1 and KS2 cover the following units as appropriate for their age:
- Families and relationships
- Health and Wellbeing
- Safety and the changing body
- Citizenship
- Economic Wellbeing
EYFS
In the Foundation stage, PSHE is taught through the Personal, Social and Emotional Development area of the EYFS framework. It is heavily integrated into daily life, play-based learning, and child-led activities rather than being solely taught in isolated, formal lessons.
Wellbeing
In addition, pupils complete dedicated Kapow Wellbeing units, which focus on emotional literacy, mental health and self-regulation. These lessons provide children with practical strategies to manage feelings, cope with change and recognise when and how to seek support.
Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset learning is taught explicitly and reinforced across PSHE and wellbeing lessons. Pupils learn how effort, practice and perseverance lead to improvement, and how mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning.
PSHE in the wider curriculum
PSHE learning is reinforced beyond discrete lessons through assemblies, class discussions, whole-school events and everyday interactions, embedding PSHE as an integral part of life at Jubilee Wood Primary School.
Impact
The impact of PSHE at Jubilee Wood Primary School is seen in the confident, respectful and resilient pupils who move through our school. Through their learning in PSHE, RSE, wellbeing and growth mindset, children develop the language, understanding and strategies needed to manage emotions, build positive relationships and approach challenges with confidence.
By the time they leave Jubilee Wood, pupils are able to:
- Communicate their feelings and needs appropriately
- Form and maintain healthy, respectful relationships
- Show empathy, kindness and respect for others
- Make informed choices about their health, safety and wellbeing
- Approach learning and life with resilience, confidence and a willingness to persevere
We aim for pupils to demonstrate positive attitudes to learning and behaviour, contributing to a calm, caring and inclusive school environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
The impact of PSHE is monitored through:
- Ongoing teacher assessment and observation
- Pupil voice and reflection
- Monitoring of behaviour, wellbeing and engagement
- Feedback from pupils, staff and parents
When our children leave Jubilee Wood Primary School, they are well prepared for secondary education as well as life beyond school. They leave as thoughtful, confident individuals who understand themselves, respect others and have the skills and resilience needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
