RE
As a core subject, Religious Education (RE) and Worldviews aims is to develop pupils’ knowledge, understanding and curiosity about various religions, faiths and world views thus enabling them to understand their place within the world. Through our whole school scheme, Kapow, we teach an inclusive and age-appropriate curriculum, supporting them throughout their school journey.
Intent
We ensure that the subject reflects the school’s statutory requirements (as per our Locally Agreed Syllabus), ethos and values. The pupils develop knowledge of a range of religious and non-religious world views, including Christianity and other key religions represented in Britain. This promotes respect, tolerance, empathy and understanding of different faiths and worldviews. Additionally, this provides pupils with positive opportunities to develop their Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) understanding as well as supporting the British Values that we follow.
Implementation
Curriculum Design:
Christianity is sequenced and taught in depth alongside other religions (E.g. Judaism and Hinduism) as well as non-religious worldviews.
The curriculum has been carefully designed to build from pupil’s own experiences and build upon their prior knowledge.
Learning is organised around key questions and themes. For example:
- What do Christians believe about God?
- Why do people celebrate festivals?
- Why are candles significant?
Teaching and learning:
We use a range of engaging and inclusive strategies to support pupils learning. For example:
- Using storytelling and drama
- Looking at artefacts, images and video clips
- Organising visits (where possible) and inviting visitors
- Discussions, drama, art and music
- Have dedicated assemblies for festivals
This allows children to build upon their understanding, learn new vocabulary and make links between beliefs and everyday life. Lessons are adapted to ensure all pupils can access learning and support SEND and EAL learners.
Assessment:
After each unit, assessment allows pupils to recap their understanding and reflect upon what has been taught.
Impact
By the end of KS2, our children will be able to know that people around the world all have different beliefs and ways of life. They will be able to differentiate between concepts and ideas but also be able to find what similarities some people may have. They will learn how to show respect towards others and sensitively ask questions that intrigue them. They will be able to make solid links and have a positive attitude towards diversity,
The Right to Withdraw from Religious Education at Jubilee Wood Primary School
We are required to teach Religious Education (RE) as part of providing a broad and balanced curriculum in our school. This is in line with the Government guidelines and the Milton Keynes Local Agreed Syllabus 2025-2030 (consistent with Section 375(3) of the Education Act 1996, School Standards and Framework Act, 1998, Schedule 19) which states that it must ‘reflect that the religious traditions of Great Britain, are in the main Christian, whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.’
Our RE approach is inclusive and explores a range of religions and worldviews rather than focusing on one belief. This includes Humanism (which places the importance on humans rather than spiritual or religious beliefs). Although this is the case, parents and carers have a legal right to withdraw from all or part of the RE lessons taught. A reason for withdrawing is not required; however, it does need to be put into a formal letter/email. Before this is done, we encourage you to consider the wider implication this may have on your child/children and to discuss any concerns that you may have regarding the RE curriculum with either your class teacher or the subject leader of Religious Education at Jubilee Wood.
